Evaporation-driven assembly of colloidal particles.
Colloidal particles absorbed at the interface of a liquid droplet arrange into unique packings during slow evaporation [V.N. Manoharan et al., Science 301, 483 (2003)]. We present a numerical and theoretical analysis of the packing selection problem. The selection of a unique packing arises almost entirely from geometrical constraints during the drying.
متن کاملColloidal Crystals-Self-Assembly of Monodispersed Colloidal Particles-
Colloidal crystals are three-dimensionally periodic lattices assembled from monodispersed spherical colloids. The ability to crystallize spherical colloids into spatially periodic structures has enabled interesting and often useful functionality not only from the constituent colloidal particles, but also from the long-range order exhibited by these periodic structures. A variety of methods by w...
متن کاملSelf-Assembly of Polyhedral Hybrid Colloidal Particles
We have developed a new method to produce hybrid particles with polyhedral shapes in very high yield (liter quantities at up to 70% purity) using a combination of emulsion polymerization and inorganic surface chemistry. The procedure has been generalized to create complex geometries, including hybrid line segments, triangles, tetrahedra, octahedra, and more. The optical properties of these part...
متن کاملSelf-assembly of Coated Colloidal Particles for Optical Applications
28 LLE Review, Volume 97 Introduction Nearly two decades ago, theoretical predictions indicated the possibility of creating omnidirectional photonic-band-gap materials that would prevent the propagation of certain wavelengths of light in all directions, while allowing transmission of other light wavelengths.1,2 Since that time, there has been a growing interest in creating these materials exper...
متن کاملHierarchical Self-Assembly of Asymmetric Amphiphatic Colloidal Particles
From dumbbells to FCC crystals, we study the self-assembly pathway of amphiphatic, spherical colloidal particles as a function of the size of the hydrophobic region using molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we analyze how local inter-particle interactions correlate to the final selfassembled aggregate and how they affect the dynamical pathway of structure formation. We present a detai...
